Gresham Fire & Emergency Services is proud to sponsor Explorer Post 788. The Post is open to young men and women aged 15 - 20 who are interested in pursuing a career in the emergency services field.

Members are trained in basic firefighting skills and in addition receive training in Hazardous Materials and how to avoid blood borne pathogens. After passing a skills test members are allowed to ride along with career crews and assist on actual emergency calls.

The Post supports the career crews by assisting with public education events, support during greater alarm fires and other special projects.

Many former members of the Post have successfully moved on to careers in the fire service, including several members of the career staff of Gresham Fire & Emergency Services.

New members are accepted once a year, generally in December. The Post is limited to 15 members at a time and there is usually intense competition for the limited openings. The process involves an application and interview process. Basic training takes about six months before new members are allowed to ride with career crews.

Explorer practices pulling hoseline.Training is conducted every Tuesday night except for major holidays from 6:30PM until approximately 9:00PM. Training topics include:fire behavior, basic hose handling and reloading, ladders, firefighting tactics, CPR, Hazardous Materials, blood borne pathogens, fire apparatus operation and many other subjects.
